About Me

If you have stumbled across this website, my name is Don Phillips. I have served as Minister of Music at First Baptist Church in Franklin, KY, since 1973! I also am a pianist, organist, composer-arranger, and have served as a keyboard clinician and adjudicator. In addition to the above, I also play the accordion!!! (See "Just For Fun" section). My educational training includes a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Campbellsville University, Campbellsville, KY, and a Master's Degree in music education from Western KY University, Bowling Green, KY.

I have over 375 titles published with twelve publishers, including Genevox/Broadman, Hope, Lillenas, GlorySound, Harold Flammer, Shawnee, Monarch Music, Triune Music, Kirkland House, Lorenz, Doxology Music, and Curtis Music Press. Products have included scores of songs for preschoolers and children, many SATB anthems (including "A New Song," commissioned for the 1998 Southern Baptist Church Music Conference), an adult Christmas musical, a youth musical, three children's Christmas musicals, and over twenty keyboard collections. In 1997, Johnny Carr and I were invited to Moscow for the Russian premiere of Children of the King, a children's musical that they co-wrote, based on the book by Max Lucado. I have received the ASCAP Standard Panel Award for the past eight consecutive years. "Canticle of Praise," an anthem co-written with Johnny Carr, was chosen by the Moody Bible Institute to be included on their recent Seasons of Praise video series. "He's With Us Still," an anthem that I wrote for First Baptist's Sesquicentennial observance, was chosen by the Chinese Christian Chorale of Chicago as their theme song, and audio and video recordings of this song have been broadcast in China by Far East Christian Communications Association. God's Promise, a Christmas musical that Johnny Carr and I wrote, was translated and published in Taiwan by Glory Music. In 2006, I was included the international Directory of Organ Composers compiled and published by the Royal School of Church Music in England. When I received the email about being included in this book, I was a little skeptical, not knowing for sure if this was the Royal School of Church Music. Mr. Henderson, who compiled the book, said he had everything he needed, except the date of my birth. (I guess they wanted to know if I was dead or alive. It never hurts to check!) Anyway,I did a little on-line research and learned it this was very much the "real thing;" that John Henderson was librarian at the Royal School -- and they never even tried to sell me one of the books!

In addition to writing and arranging, I have presented piano concerts and led keyboard workshops and clinics in several states and have served on the keyboard faculty during Church Music Leadership Weeks at Ridgecrest and Glorieta several times. In 2003 I served as Conference Pianist for Music Week at Glorieta.

In 1994, I opened the Back Porch Studio in my home for music writing, arranging, sequencing, and recording. I also produce personal and contract recordings and accompaniment tracks.

My family includes my wife, Janis, two sons: Jonathan and Mark; Jonathan's wife, Amy and their children, Matthew and Mollie; and Mark, his wife, Parker, and their children, Isabelle (Izzy), born on May 15, 2008 and the newest member of the Phillips family: Luke, born on February 24, 2010!! Mark and Parker have served the past three years as missionaries in a primitive village in the West African country of Niger. They are home on furlough until August when they plan to return to Niger. (See "Recommended websites and links" for links to Jonathan and Mark.)
